in early Spring walking on the board walk
above the marshy ground
assailed by twittering tiny birds
hiding in the brush and tall ferns
buds about to burst on the trees

a crow flies over
squawking to its fellows

this boardwalk built by volunteers
a pleasant place to walk
to get my exercise
lower blood pressure and maybe lose weight
and tune into Nature
a much needed respite from stress

natural ponds strewn here and there
no ducks yet, the only thing missing
from this natural habitat

benches placed strategically for the weary
or just to enjoy the fresh sea breeze
and natural flora

I sit and write; enjoying the morning
letting my worries dissipate
letting the sounds of Nature wash over me

prehistoric foot cover
animal skins cured and stretched over
easily injured feet
allowing human exploration
from out the jungle carpet

what was the clue
what was the impetus
to figure out the necessity
to discover the process

perhaps the maker was the first to notice
to devise
to pamper
to protect
when walking over unfriendly terrain
allowing further exploration and
domination of a planet

kudos to the unknown crafter of sandals
the technological advance of their time
